The Laytonsville Woman’s Club – Our History
Back in the 1960s, a couple named Warren and Anna Marie Tydings moved from Chevy Chase to Laytonsville. Warren Tydings had retired after many years of working for the Hecht Company, and he was ready for a new opportunity. The Tydings built the Montgomery Country Club. Anna Marie Tydings had been a member of the Chevy Chase Women’s Club, but she must have missed the camaraderie and the sense of purpose. She set about organizing a new chapter here in her new community.
At the time we were first organized, back in April of 1968, we were known as the Rolling Acres Woman’s Club. One of the original charter members, Anna Mae Pointer, is still an active member in our club.
Club membership grew so rapidly that our name was changed to be more inclusive. In 1973 we became the Laytonsville Woman’s Club. Anna Marie Tydings went on to become the president of the Montgomery County General Federation of Woman’s Clubs.
Fifty years later, we are still going strong. Although our club is small in comparison to groups in other regions of the county and state, our twenty-some members are active in our local churches, schools, historic preservation, town government, Lions Club, 4-H, the local Garden Club, quilting guilds, and other social organizations. Fifty years later, we are still dedicated to community service by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.
